To Zane – Month 2

Zane in the car seat.

You in your car seat. Mommy had to shoot this photo because you looked so amazed! This is how Mommy feels knowing you’re already two months old.

OK little man, make a note of this because Mommy is actually writing your letter ON THE DAY that it’s supposed to be up! I’m pretty sure these won’t be on time most months, but I will try to be as close as I can. You have now finished up more than eight weeks in our world, and you are officially TWO MONTHS OLD today! This age is never really talked about like three or six months, but your mommy and daddy still see it as a milestone. You have done so much this month, and CHANGED so much… sometimes, your mom and dad don’t even notice that you’re different because we see you every day, but people keep saying how much you’ve changed so it must be true!

♥♥♥

Mommy cried one day in your first month because we had seen your cousin Jaiden who was born seven weeks before you, and she already looked so different. I told Daddy that I didn’t want you to change, that I liked you the way you were and wanted you to stay little like that for awhile so I could enjoy it. But Zane, Mommy loves you EVEN MORE now than I did then… more every day in fact! Mommy would still like to keep you small for awhile… I know I’m going to miss nursing you, with your little hand all wound up in my hair or collar, and I worry that when that’s over you might not need your mommy as much anymore! But all the changes that are happening to you are so amazing that I guess it’s okay for you to grow.

If people thought you were bright and alert your first month, they should see you now! You still sleep lots, but during the day you always spend at least a few hours awake. Your eyes are wide and curious and you have the BEST facial expressions as you take in the world around you. You’ll raise one eyebrow or furrow your forehead like you just can’t figure it all out, and anytime you’re experiencing something new you look SO SERIOUS that it makes us laugh. You probably notice even more than Mommy and Daddy do! You never seem to be afraid of anything; you just take it all in, no matter where you are or who holds you or what noise you are hearing. Mommy and Daddy like to think that’s because you trust us and you know we’ll always watch out for you.

Zane and Oma

You dancing with Oma at Auntie Jess’s wedding. Mommy and Daddy sure enjoyed watching Oma and Grandpa proudly sticking you in everyone’s faces!

The big event this month was your auntie Jess’s wedding. You were quiet for the whole church service, although Mommy had to hold your soother in your mouth for a little bit of it to keep you from fussing. We don’t blame you, church can be boring sometimes! You got yourself out of there in your own creative way by peeing out of your diaper, all over the front of your pants, and all over the pew in front of us! Mommy couldn’t believe the size of that diaper explosion, and we missed the vows and the kiss because of it. It was then that Mommy realized that she doesn’t mind the new way of life at all. I have to put you first, no matter what else is going on… and you know what? Doesn’t bother me at all because you are the most important thing in Mommy’s life right now.

♥♥♥

You were REALLY good the rest of the day. You sat in Mommy’s arms and looked at the photographer even though you were hungry, and during the reception you slept right through dinner and let us eat, and then you were awake and cute all night long. Which was perfect because Oma and Grandpa stole you and spent the entire night packing you around and sticking you in everyone’s faces! Mommy and Daddy just watched your grandparents showing you off and seeing how proud they are of you just made us even more proud. It was fun to watch too, we kind of wished we’d had popcorn! You slept a little, just random little catnaps, but for most of the night you were awake to visit and you were patient, quiet, and hardly fussed at all even when you got hungry. If only you would always be this good for outings… but Mommy and Daddy know we better enjoy it while we have it!

Zane and Daddy playing WoW

Your daddy really IS amazing. He can include you in whatever he’s doing… you already love to sit on his lap and watch the colors while he plays games.

This month Mommy also went away from you a couple of times. Mommy was away OVERNIGHT for your auntie Jess’s stagette party… I’m still not sure how we survived that! You stayed with Daddy at home and he fed you bottles from the freezer stash. Mommy wasn’t worried at all because you have an AMAZING daddy, but OH MAN was it hard to be away from you. I had to call and have Daddy put you on the phone and that just made me miss you more. Taking care of you is just part of who I am now and I felt a little empty while I was away from the job! The other time we were apart was when Mommy and Daddy went on a date and left you with Oma, and once again I think you had an easier time than your poor lonely parents. We did need some time away but we kind of didn’t know what to do with ourselves!

♥♥♥

Lots of changes with you this month too. Mommy usually notices things first… you started to really SEE yourself this month. You were lying on the bed one night and waving your hands around, and suddenly you put the brakes on one arm right in front of your face and just got all serious and furrowed up your forehead and STARED at your left hand. HOLY CRAP, what is that thing attached to me? Since that night, you spend a large amount of your awake time trying to get that hand in your mouth. You can get it there when you’re half asleep, but when you’re awake and trying that darn hand will wave randomly, thumb you in the forehead, smack you in the jaw… and you just keep trying while Mommy and Daddy laugh our heads off at your frustration. We have tried helping you get the hand there, but you pull it right out like you are determined to DO IT YOURSELF. Right now you are better at getting that hand to your mouth if it’s holding something. Mommy gives you a finger and you stuff it right in. But you’ll figure out the empty hand too, I am sure!

♥♥♥

You are learning to do other things with your body too. You’re already figuring out what you can do with your legs, when Mommy puts you to her shoulder to burp you push your feet into the pillow and stand right up. This week you’ve even been standing up on one leg, Mommy can’t believe how strong those little legs are! Mommy has this weird picture in her head of you walking at 6 months… I’m sure you’ll walk at a normal time, but your legs are SO STRONG already, you just don’t have the motor skills you need to control what they do. You are holding your head up very well too, but again still lacking some coordination! You have hit Mommy in the jaw pretty hard quite a few times during burping. Pretty sure it hurts me a lot more than it hurts you!

You’re getting really good with your hands this month, Mommy hands you a rattle and you’ll hold it and even wave it around for a few minutes before dropping it. Funny thing is, you can put something into your mouth if it’s in your hand… the rattle, Mommy’s finger, Mommy’s shirt or hair, you name it and in it goes. But if you have just your empty hand, it just won’t cooperate! You don’t pick up toys on your own yet, but we know that’s not far off because you sure are interested in them! Whenever we put you in any chair or other place with toys above you, you stare intently at them as if you would just LOVE to reach out and grab them but don’t quite know how to do it. Mommy watches you carefully now because we know we’ll turn around one day and you will have picked up whatever object happens to be close to you.

♥♥♥

Probably the biggest thing this month – and the thing Mommy and Daddy have enjoyed the most – is your talking. Zane, you are SO CUTE when you get going with this. You just look right at Mommy or Daddy or anyone who’s holding you really, and you talk up a storm. The more they say to you, the more you have to say back to them. You get this incredibly happy look on your face, and the cute noises just pour out, interspersed with your adorable little grins. Mommy has let entire hours just disappear talking to you and listening to your stories – and there are lots of them because you do this whenever you’re awake!

♥♥♥

You have also started smiling. Oh, you smiled from day one of course, but it was always just that reflex smile when you were falling asleep or just waking up. Now, although you still have those smiles, you also smile when you’re wide awake… you smile right at Mommy and Daddy or whoever talks to you, and sometimes I could SWEAR you almost laugh. Mommy’s favorite smile to see is when Daddy kisses you… you squint up your eye on whichever side he’s kissing and you get a wide-open-mouth grin like you’re going to burst out laughing. We are sure your smiles are real now, and most of them are just for us… and they are the best gift you could give us!

Zane and Charlie

You are pretty content no matter where you are, as long as your tummy is full. Here you’re snuggled up right next to Charlie while we watch a movie.

Your personality is really starting to develop this month. So far, you are a VERY content baby most of the time! You are relaxed and patient when you’re up, Mommy can take you anywhere and not worry about anything. You just sit and talk happily, or stare at THE ELUSIVE HAND, or look around at everything. Even if we wake you up by taking you somewhere, you don’t cry… you just look around and if you’re still tired you fall back asleep. You don’t even get mad when you’re hungry… you just start to root around and (maybe) talk a little louder and grunt a lot. But you know what you want too… if Mommy doesn’t feed you within a few minutes, you exercise those lungs so hard Mommy wonders if you’ll have a voice left! You’re all business… you tell us when you need something, like food or a diaper change, but the rest of the time you just let the world go by. You do like us to pick you up a lot though, so sometimes we have to let you fuss for a bit (when we know you don’t need anything). Usually, unless you really DO need something, you fuss for a few minutes and then go back to THE HAND. We will love you no matter what of course, but we sure hope you are always this easy!

Sleeping on the bed

You can see why we think you are the most beautiful baby in the whole world… because it’s true!

People stop us now, everywhere we go, to comment on you. Everyone will look at a baby and say “oh, how cute” or “aww” but when people see you, they stop in their tracks and say something like “OHmygod that is the most beautiful baby I have ever seen!” which just enforces Mommy and Daddy’s belief that you’re the best looking baby in the world! It’s nice to know we’re not COMPLETELY biased although I know we’ll never be completely impartial either. We do amaze people, though, when they ask how old you are. Everyone thinks that you’re about a month or two months older than you actually are! I guess that makes sense, since you came out looking like you were already a month old. You’re just going to be a big boy!

♥♥♥

To wrap this up, let me just say you are the best thing in our lives mini-man! We don’t mind that you take up so much of our time, and we don’t mind that we have to put you before anything else, because we love you SO MUCH we can’t imagine doing things any differently. You have made these two months the best days of our lives, and we can’t wait to see what’s to come in the (many but still not enough) months that we have ahead of us!
